President Barack Obama plans to address the nation’s largest gay rights group this weekend in an effort to mollify an uneasy Democratic constituency frustrated with the White House’s slow pace.
Obama plans to address Saturday’s Human Rights Campaign fundraising dinner gala, the organization and the White House announced Monday afternoon.
“It is fitting that (Obama) will speak to our community on the night that we pay tribute to his friend and mentor Sen. Edward Kennedy, who knew that as president, Barack Obama would take on the unfinished business of this nation _ equal rights” for the gay community and for “every person who believes in liberty and justice for all,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. 阅读更多 »

One of the perversities of public life is that disgraced politicians seeking a comeback rely on clownish self-parody, while entertainers cloak themselves in moral — and immoral — seriousness.
The intersection of those separate but equally self-serving lines was reached last week. Tom DeLay, the Republican former House majority leader, wriggled his derrière to “Wild Thing” on “Dancing With the Stars,” and the former wild star Mackenzie Phillips told Oprah Winfrey that as a public service she wanted to tell the world that she willingly had sex with her rock-singer father, John Phillips.
“I can’t be the only one this has happened to,” the actress and former drug addict said on Wednesday. “Someone needs to put a face on not only nonconsensual incest but consensual incest.”
Both spectacles were momentarily shocking, but not momentous: audiences have grown inured to weirder sights and sadder stories.
Politicians can no longer talk their way out of trouble, they have to shake it off by revealing their inner dancing fool. Celebrities can’t just write a tell-all biography and earn a coveted appearance on “Oprah,” they must disclose a horrifying secret.
Elected officials trade their dignity, performers barter their privacy — it’s transparency as currency. Famous people can monetize almost anything, but the price of publicity keeps getting steeper.

Authorities in Bucharest claim to have invested 270.000.000 euros in rehabilitating schools that will not be able to function this year either, Evenimentul Zilei reads. Thousands of pupils will return to school-building sites on September 14. Exoneration works have been stagnating for several years for unexplained reasons. The worst situation is recorded in the Capital: after six years of works, only nine out of 102 schools will open this September. The rehabilitation of these 102 education institutions is part of a project financed by the European Investment Bank.
According to authorities, 270.000.000 euros have been invested so far in rehabilitating schools. Out if the sum, 3 million euros went into the pockets of a consultant that should have seen the building works completed by now.
